World War I Tour through Isonzo Valley
A tour leading past the historical remains of World War I and showing the Isonzo valley on the border between Italy and Slovenia from its best side. A historically significant and at the same time great motocycle tour for experienced bikers.
The tour starts in front of the tourist office in Faak am See. We then head towards Finkenstein and over the Wurzenpass directly to Slovenia. Passing the Ski World Cup slopes we reach the village of Potkoren and Planica before entering Italy. Arriving in Tarvisio, we turn in the direction of the Predil Pass. Passing the emerald blue Lago del Predil, we climb the hairpin bends to the top of the pass and make our first stop.
Here, a monument reminds us of the bloody battles of World War I. This is also the beginning of the Isonzo Valley - today called Soca valley. We pick up speed again and climb the Kluze fortress on a winding road. Afterwards we reach the last resting place for many Austro-Hungarians soldiers who died in World War I - the military cemetery near Bovec. We follow the Soca river through the valley and then turn into the direction of the Uccea and Tanameas passes at Zaga. Back in Italy, a well-deserved lunch and an espresso await us in Tarcento. Freshly refuelled, we cross the Canal Valley in the direction of Austria, leaving on the mountains where the bloody Isonzo battles were once fought behind us.
Shortly before Tarvisio we stop again and take some time to visit the Lion Monument. This is dedicated to Hauptmann Hensel, whom we had already met on the Predil. After 40 kilometres we reach Lake Faak. A historically significant and at the same time great motorbike tour for experienced bikers.
